In this recession, if you think that your skills alone will help you get your foot in the door you are sadly mistaken. You need to pull everything out of your arsenal to give yourself the extra push you need to get ahead of the competition. This includes making sure your image is up to par. Below are a few ideas of what you can put together for the big day.
When interviewing for positions in a more corporate atmosphere, it is always best to stick to suits, or basic separates (for example: button-ups, skirt or pants and a cardigan). Black, navy, and gray are usually the recommended colors. I tend to have a problem with this look, so to make myself feel better I try to add little pops of color in my accessories or carry a bold colored bag to off set the neutrals. Makeup, hair and nails should also be clean and neutral.
When interviewing for more creative fields such as fashion, you get to show a little bit more of your personality. You can play with colors a little more, etc. But you have to remember that it is still an interview, and you have to maintain an image of professionalism. You still have to maintain that balance, which can be challenging at times but it can still be done. I personally think that stores like Ann Taylor and Club Monaco have that balance down to a science, so you can check out their sites for more ideas.
It's really tough out here for everyone in this economy, so if you're in the process of looking for a job and interviewing, I wish you the best of luck :)
